چکیده

This study aims to select fungi isolates reduce olive mill wastewater (OMWW) chemical oxygen demand (COD) and phenolic compounds (PC), as well their genotoxicity effect. Treatment with mold, isolated by an innovative technique using compound-selective media, showed a reduction rate of about 4% for COD 2% PC during one month incubation without optimization the treatment conditions. Whereas this percentage reached 98% 96% PC, respectively, after only 12 days treatment, when C:N ratio was adjusted 30 adding urea nitrogen source at 150 rpm agitation speed. Genetic sequence homology most efficient mold isolate 100% similarity Penicillium chrysogenum. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis extracts untreated OMWW presence five compounds—hydroxytyrosol 1.22 g.L?1, tyrosol 0.05 caffeic acid 0.16 p-coumaric g.L?1 oleuropein 0.04 g.L?1—that were eliminated degradation process 88.82%. Genotoxicity, assessed Vicia-faba root cell, significant decrease in micronucleus frequency fungal treatment. These results confirm positive role eliminate ability improve agronomic potential.

Enrichment of Phenolic Compounds from Olive Mill Wastewater and In Vitro Evaluation of Their Antimicrobial Activities

The production of olive oil generates massive quantities of by-product called olive mill wastewater (OMWW). The uncontrolled disposal of OMWW poses serious environmental problems. The OMWW effluent is rich in several polyphenolic compounds. Liquid-liquid extraction of OMWW using ethyl acetate solvent was used to enrich phenolic compounds under investigation. Total phenolic and flavonoid content...

Synergistic Antibacterial Effects of Polyphenolic Compounds from Olive Mill Wastewater

Polyphenols or phenolic compounds are groups of secondary metabolites widely distributed in plants and found in olive mill wastewater (OMW). Phenolic compounds as well as OMW extracts were evaluated in vitro for their antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive (Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae). Most of th...

Synergetic effect between photocatalytic degradation and adsorption processes on the removal of phenolic compounds from olive mill wastewater.

The photocatalytic degradation of two phenolic compounds, p-coumaric acid and caffeic acid, was performed with a suspended mixture of TiO(2) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) (at pH=3.4 and 8). Adsorption, direct photolysis and photocatalytic degradation were studied under different pH and UV light sources (sunlight vs. 365nm UV lamps). The potential for reusing this catalyst mixture in seque...
